Gaming Survey from Penny Arcade Surprises

Posted in Uncategorized on January 31, 2009 by richinjapan

By way of Kotaku, a survey from the good fellas at Penny Arcade offers some interesting insights into the gaming community. The most amazing part of the survey? Some 38,000 people responded! That’s a lot of people. Many surveys offered by regular news sites usually poll anywhere from 50 to 200 people. It’s also worth noting that the respondees are all of a particular group — that is to say, Penny Arcade afficianados. So while this survey doesn’t tell us much about gaming as a whole (as those who visit Penny Arcade are likely to lean towards the “hard” side of the core), it does give us insight into… well, people like us, I suppose.

The highlights from the survey:

Average Age: 26

Boy/Girl Split: 94% Boys, 6% Girls

Internet Usage:
– Cable/DSL: 84.7%
– LAN: 8.0%
– Fios: 3.0%
– WiMax: 0.7%
– 56k Modem: 0.5%
– Other: 3.1%

Average Number of Hours of TV Per Week: 6.1 Hours

Console Ownership:
– PC: 86.3%
– Xbox 360: 54.1%
– Wii: 53.5%
– PS2: 52.7%
– Nintendo DS: 51.5%
– iPhone/iPod: 29.9%
– XBOX: 26.2%
– PS3: 24.5%
– Sony PSP: 20.5%

Average Game Library Collection: 73

Average Gaming Hours/Week: 18

Average Household Income: $66,000

Average Games Purchased/Month: 2

Game Genres Played:
– RPGs: 89.7%
– FPS’: 79.0%
– Platformers: 63.3%
– RTS’: 59.9%
– Turn Based Strat: 56.0%
– Tabletop/CCG: 40.0%
– Simulations: 37.7%
– Web Based: 37.5%
– Driving/Racing: 31.4%
– 2D Fighters: 29.9%
– Shooters: 29.0%
– 3D Fighters: 28.0%
– Sports Games: 14.7%
– Flight Sims: 10.5%

Some things I found interesting: 1) It’s nice to know I’m the average age. 2) My game collection pales in comparison to the average. 3) The average hours spent gaming per week is three times the average hours of TV viewing.

How about you? Do you see yourself in these results?

Microsoft Fires

Goddamn recession. Microsoft says politely goodbye to about 30% of their permanent testers along with the team in charge of “Flight Simulation”.

Slow down in PC sales seems to be the guilty here, but who knows when will this hit the Xbox too… So do us a favor, and go buy more !

PC Gaming and You

Posted in PC on January 25, 2009 by skullmatrix

My name is Brandon, AKA Skullmatrix. I have been a PC gamer since I was 10. Back then I played on a 386, had a 13 inch CRT monitor, no sound card, and no graphics card. I couldn’t have been happier. PC gaming back then meant making custom boot disks to squeeze all the memory out of the machine to play doom. It meant looking up the 3rd word on paragraph 3 on page 76 of the manual to authenticate your copy of Wizardry. It also meant modifying bitmaps to make the Wolfenstein guy pick up giant wangs instead of health packs. For the longest time I didn’t own a mouse. It was a good time to remember, but no one in their right mind would go back.

Old School Adventure Gaming

Old School Adventure Gaming

One reason is that gaming on the PC also used to mean knowing true rage. Installing a new sound card took days. I remember my father coming home with a CD rom drive. I was the happiest 12 year old ever. I was even happier a month later when we finally figured out how to get the thing to work. Loom was awesome. I spent long hours looking through an 800 page DOS book trying to figure out how to make a custom batch file that would automatically zip a bunch of .wad files across several disks, so that when I went to a friends house, we could play all the custom maps I had made. Of course the disks would become corrupt the second you looked at them, the maps would have some fatal flaw in them that crashed it every 10 minutes, and that stupid book was written by software engineers that had no regard for an 11 year old’s lack of computer skills. Every hour of PC gaming was accompanied by 20 minutes of frustration and anger.

We wont even mention configuring IRQ channels.

Hallelujiah! Two Great Patches On the Way!

Posted in News, Online, PS3, Xbox 360 with tags , , on January 23, 2009 by richinjapan

According to PS3Fanboy, there are two great patches on their way in the next two weeks. Listen up!

First up, Resistance 2. Many people have been slapped in the face with a bug that resets their level back to the beginning, but the fix is on the way — as in, this coming Monday (Jan 26). Even better is the news that the XP data was never actually lost, so the patch will bring back your original levels, as well as adding that to the XP you’ve gained since the bug hit. The patch will also include various tweaks to gameplay/ammo, trophies/medals, and match-making/clan support.

Next up, on February 3, Criterion continues their relentless support of Burnout Paradise with a patch adding many long-awaited features. Cheif among them? THE ABILITY TO RESTART RACES! I swear, this game just keeps getting better and better. It’s enough to make you wish you hadn’t played it before, just to experience all this stuff at once. Other improvements include better night driving, balancing to several game modes, and improved handling to make the game more friendly to new-comers.

Rejoice, my friends. Rejoice. And while you’re at it, check out the links to see the detailed update info.
